Safe-Child Advocacy (SCA) has launched its school-based awareness activities in preparation for the International Day for Street Children (IDSC) 2026, which will be observed globally on April 12, 2026. This year’s theme, “Protect, Not Punish,” emphasizes the urgent need to ensure access to justice for street‑connected children and to uphold their rights at every level.
On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the SCA team visited Christian M/A Basic School (Bomso) and Rev Kubinson Memorial School (Asafo, Kumasi) on Friday, 13th March 2026 where they engaged over 500 pupils through interactive child‑rights education sessions.
The outreach focused on helping pupils understand who a child is, reinforcing that every person below 18 years deserves dignity, care, and protection. The team also highlighted children’s rights, including the right to education, healthcare, shelter, food, leisure, and protection from harm. These rights, recognised globally and affirmed by national constitutional provisions, were explained in simple and relatable ways to ensure pupils could easily connect with them.
SCA also emphasized that rights come with responsibilities. Pupils were encouraged to appreciate that when parents pay their school fees, they have a responsibility to study; and when parents provide medication, they must take it as prescribed.
The team further discussed different forms of abuse—physical, emotional, neglect, sexual exploitation, and forced or harmful child labour. It was explained that normal household chores are not considered child labour unless they deprive children of their education, health, or leisure.
Children were encouraged to report any form of abuse to their parents, teachers, trusted adults, the police, or Safe-Child Advocacy. While reasonable correction from parents or guardians is acceptable, any action that threatens a child’s physical or emotional well-being amounts to abuse.
An interactive question‑and‑answer session allowed pupils to ask questions, share their experiences, and better understand what constitutes safe and unsafe situations. Real-life examples, such as helping parents in a family shop, were used to help pupils distinguish between supportive tasks and exploitative labour.
To reinforce learning, SCA distributed child rights awareness posters, exercise books, pens, and human trafficking information materials. Members of ConPAHT–Talitha Kum Ghana joined the outreach to educate pupils about forms of human trafficking, tactics traffickers use, the effects of trafficking, and how children can protect themselves.
This school outreach forms part of SCA’s annual activities leading up to the International Day for Street Children. As the world prepares to commemorate April 12, 2026 under the theme “Protect, Not Punish,” SCA remains committed to advocating for justice, protection, and child‑centred support for all street‑connected children.
Having already reached over 500 pupils, SCA looks forward to extending this awareness campaign to more schools throughout the period.
