Safe-Child Advocacy, Talithakum network, JPIC & the Anti-Trafficking Police Unit marks the 2024 Street Children International 
Day in Kumasi.
The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul at Safe-Child Advocacy Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi- Ghana marks International Street Children Day in collaboration with Adamfo Ghana, the Anti-Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Justice, Peace & Integrity of Creation, Talithakum Ghana network, and Chance for Children Kumasi.
As part of activities to commemorate this year International Day for Street Children, SCA on April 12, held a workshop on the “Survive led mentorship” programme for girls & young women in street situations.
The workshop was to educate the target group on the risks of living on the street and to offer them knowledge and skills to protect themselves against human trafficking and other predators likely to meet them on the street.
The workshop brought women who have survived tough life situations who freely shared with the girls in small groups. The interaction was lively and offered great mentorship space. Participants were delighted and expressed thus, “we felt belong and one with everyone.” This outcome actualized the theme for the day. See pictures of the program here:

Thousands of children who deserve to be in schools or training in employable skills still live and work on the streets the world over with Africa, leading the worst scenery. Ghana is not excluded from this stark reality. Over sixty thousand (60, 000) lovely children of Ghana are found on the streets of Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale, and other major cities in Ghana.
This is generally associated with poverty, child abuse, peer influence, outmoded cultural practices, etc.
The phenomenon deprives poor children of dignified lives and future.
Education, health care, food, and shelter are among the basic rights entitled of every child. But how do these children enjoy these rights when they spend their lives hustling on the streets?

Staff members of Safe-Child Advocacy embarked on School awareness campaign as part of activities to mark this year’s international day for Street Connected Children.
The team, on Wednesday, 13th March, 2024 went to Kwadaso S. D. A. Junior High School “B” in the Kwadaso Municipality, and on Wednesday March 20th, visited New Amakom M/ A Junior High School “A” in the Kumasi Metropolis, both in Ashanti region of Ghana.
The aim of the campaign was to sensitize students and teachers of these schools on child rights, abuse, safeguarding and human trafficking. Over five hundred students were educated on the topics in these schools. We advised the students to prioritize their studies over any act that negatively affects their development. They were also educated on signs of child or human right abuse and empowered to report such cases to appropriate offices.
It was an interactive session. We allowed participants to ask questions, make input or share their experiences on the topics.
International day for street connected children is commemorated on 12th of April every year, and school awareness campaign is one of the activities Safe-Child Advocacy is using to mark it this year.

St. Vincent de Paul Day Care holds Career Day to motivate learners’ ambitions.
Career Day is one of the most important events in school calendar, especially for children. Marking of this day motivates learners to pursue their career ambitions, due to the excitement associated with the feel of their anticipated professions and the memory it creates.
On Thursday, February15, 2024, St. Vincent de Paul Day Care, one of the units of SCA providing early childhood education to children of vulnerable parents, mostly, street connected women in the Kumasi Metropolis, held our maiden Career Day celebration under the theme “All Careers are Unique and Special”.
The celebration was exciting and aimed at helping the kids realize their career, emphasizing that choosing career is a result of personal decision. These serve as beacon of motivation, instilling in leaners sense of belief in their own abilities and reminding them that success is attainable with dedication and perseverance.
It was amazing to witness kids display in the apparels of their aiming professions. The head teacher of the school Sr. Maria Goretti DC, sensitized the learners about their career choices.
Among others she educated them about the services of professions like, Army, police, doctors, nurses, pastors, pilot, teachers and lawyers. She advised them to take their studies serious and urge their guardians to help them achieve their aims in future.
To climax it all, a debate session was held among the pupils in groups, to compare and contrast certain professions. The best debaters were awarded, and they were made to understand that “All Careers are Unique and Special”.

Safe-Child Advocacy organized workshop on Safeguarding for a cross-section of beneficiaries, namely, those in the SCA formal education scheme. Participants at this workshop were young persons sponsored by SCA to access formal education from Upper primary to Senior Secondary school.
This workshop was one of many activities lined up by SCA.to mark International Day for Street Connected Children 2024. The workshop was focused on Child Rights Champions. The forum was used to help participants in also self-building.
Participants were empowered on Safeguarding for Children and Youths, Self-Awareness, Building Self Esteem, and developing Public Speaking Skills.
Focus group discussion was used to engage participants. Discussions centered around various topics relating with Safeguarding. These includes discrimination and belonging. Participants shared their experiences after which each group presented their findings on a flip chart. Over forty participants ranging from upper primary to Senior High School were present.
In all, the program was insightful and highly educative. Participants expressed in the evaluation of the programme that they felt educated and empowered. 
SCA, is able to support young persons from vulnerable backgrounds access formal education thanks to KZE/Misereor, Adamfo Ghana, Wilde Ganzen, and a host of others who form our funding base. Over 200 youngsters from very challenging backgrounds are supported to access formal education.

It was indeed a beautiful moment as we graduated eleven (11) of our trainees last Saturday, February 3, 2024
. They included 9 Dressmaking and 2 Hairdressing trainees who sat for the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) examination in October last year and came out with flying colors.
This made it the eight (8th) graduation ceremony held in the Saint Louise de Marillac Vocational Training Centre, Appaidu to promote young girls who have successfully completed their Vocational Training at the Center. The facility is an offshoot of Safe-Child Advocacy, Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi, but, owned and managed by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul,
Outstanding among other dignitaries present, was the chief and queen mother of Appiadu Traditional council Odefour Yaw Barima (II) and Nana Amonu Gyamfuaah (I), Rev. Fr. Joseph Louise Antwi Boasiako rector of Christ the Teacher College of Education, and the Assistant Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Catholic Church Appiadu.
Also, the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary aspirant for Ooforikrom Constituency, Mr. Mike Aidoo, the Assembly Member for Emena, Appiadu, Kokoben Electoral area and some members of the media were present as well.
The graduands were awarded NVTI certificate and set-up kits to start up their businesses in their various trades. Dressmaking graduands received sewing machines and other a whiles Hairdressing graduands received Hairdryers, Washing basin, and other tools and materials to facilitate their startup. Relatives and friends of graduands witnessed the August occasion.

HopeXchange medical Centre reaches out to the less privileged in society through Safe-Child Advocacy (SCA), Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi, with a medical outreach at the Drop-in Centre of SCA yesterday day 1 of February 2024.
This gesture was welcomed by over 200 children, youths, mostly women in street situations (Kayeyei) in Kumasi Metropolitan. This event was sponsored by USAID. For us at SCA, this event is among the numerous set out to mark the 2024 Street Children International Day, where we aim to provide access to children, youths, and women in street and other vulnerable situations.
Also, snacks were given to the participants. We were excited to have staff members from partner organization,
Chance for Children to help in the mobilization of the target group.

Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul organizes a five (5) day training on capacity building skill acquisition on the production of cosmetics.
These include production of Liquid soap, medicated and non-medicated powders, perfume, scurring powder, body cream, hair conditioner and others.
The training is ongoing at the Daughters of Charity, St. Louise Vocational Training Centre, Appiadu – Kumasi. From Monday, January 22 to Friday January 26, 2024.

Safe-Child Advocacy, Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi under the able leadership of our Director, Sr. Olivia Umoh, DC, held a one-day staff retreat to kick start the 2024 work year.
The Opening Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Michael Owusu-Kwarteng who also was the retreat director on the theme. “More than just Work”.
The theme, he said, is a divine call for every member of the SCA team to sacrifice willfully to the service of the poor without counting the cost. He cited quotes like
“The most terrible poverty is not lack of material things, but the loneliness and the feeling of being unloved” and other popular quotes by Mother Theresa to rekindle the teams’ serving spirit going into 2024.
Also, Sr. Gertrude Gima, DC sister servant of the Daughters of Charity community in Kumasi, also took time to educate staff at the retreat about the
400th anniversary of the experience of the light of Pentecost of St. Louise de Marillac, co-founder of Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. She also shared with the retreatants about the Diamond Jubilee of the Daughters of Charity Province of Nigeria which Ghana mission is part of. 
Other activities including, exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and Blessing of the Drop-in Centre, the administrative office of Safe- Child Advocacy Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi.

Merry Christmas to you our valued partners. As we mark the end of another successful year, we deem this an opportunity to express our sincerest appreciation for your continual support for our services for children in street and other vulnerable situations.
We also wish to inform you that, we are breaking for Christmas and New Year on December 22, 2023, and will resume on January 9, 2024. We hope 2024 gives us the grace to impact and touch more lives.
Thanks immensely to all our friends and benefactors. Although we observe the Christmas holidays, our residential facility remains open to children, girls and women in distress.
