International Day for Street Children 2021 Report

International Day for Street Children 2021 Report

International Day for Street Children was inaugurated by the Consortium for Street Children, UK in 2014 and celebrated on the 12th of April every year to create awareness on the plight of vulnerable children in street situations, and the need to speak up for their rights so they are not ignored. These children in one way or the other are on the streets through no fault of theirs but have been tagged as criminals, prostitutes among others which demoralize these children and make them feel neglected, unloved, and not part of the world. The global pandemic limited the activities in creating awareness notwithstanding the celebration was successful. Various activities that took place to mark this year’s celebration included awareness campaigns, outreach to schools, and donation to various schools as a way of proving the need for essential services for these children including access to better and quality educational facilities.

#ADVOCACY FOR STREET CHILDREN / IDSCGHANA

Children in the street situations are among the most vulnerable population in our world. Children are found living on the streets in almost every country the world over. Undoubtedly, countries within the African continent and Asia have a high population of children living in street situations.

Over 60, 000 children live on the streets of Accra the capital city of Ghana, and over 20, 000 children live on the street of Kumasi, the second largest city of Ghana. Children in street situation in Kumasi are as young as 5years of age and as old as 17 years of age. Sadly, some of these young persons spend their childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood on the street.

Children in street situations roam the streets in search of livelihood. Their daily lives are endless toils. They have no safe space to stay, no good food, and sometimes no food at all. They live rough in dirty, populated spaces and struggle for survival by engaging in menial tasks for sustenance. Some children struggle to support their families.

Children and young persons in street situations lack access to the basic services and live in deprivation as though they belong to a different world or they are a curse on the land.

We would like to invite the general public to reflect on the following questions; what did these children really do wrong that they have to suffer so much? What does the future hold for them? How can we all contribute to providing some access for these children?

Safe-child Advocacy in preparation to mark the 2021 International Street Children Day, invites everyone to think of some practical action to give a child in street situation access to services such as health care, education, shelter, protection, food, etc.
