International Day of the Girl Child—A Call to Invest in Girls’ Education
Safe-Child Advocacy (Kumasi—Ghana)
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela.
The first principle of the Church’s social teaching is the dignity of the human person—the respect owed to each person because they are created in the image and likeness of God. Education is fundamental to upholding this dignity and ensuring every child can reach their full potential” (Catholic Social Teaching).
As the world recognizes the International Day of the Girl Child, we at Safe-Child Advocacy celebrate our mission to lift the most vulnerable girls from the streets of our city in Kumasi and into the transformative power of education. For two decades, we have lived by the profound truth: “Educating a girl child, it’s educating the whole community.” This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it is a demonstrable fact. When a girl receives an education, she is equipped not only to secure her own future but also to elevate her family and community. Her learning breaks cycles of poverty and empowers her to become a leader, a changemaker, and a beacon of hope. This year marks our 20th anniversary of this vital service, and our commitment remains unwavering: to serve children, especially girls, from the street through the gift of learning.
Our work is deeply informed by the educational philosophy of Paulo Freire, who taught that education is fundamentally a “moment of liberation.” For the children we serve, education is the critical practice of freedom, moving them from a state of vulnerability to one of conscious agency. Freire’s belief that learners must be subjects, not objects, of their own learning perfectly aligns with our goal to empower these girls to critically engage with their world and become architects of their own destinies. We don’t just teach subjects; we foster critical awareness, a sense of human dignity, and the ability to challenge the structural injustices that led them to the streets. Our education is a holistic formation aiming at forming the whole person based on competence, compassion, conscience, and commitment. By supporting Safe-Child Advocacy, you invest in an educational model that is inherently empowering, aiming to liberate the potential within every girl fully.
The mission of Safe-Child Advocacy is a direct embodiment of the Church’s teaching on empowering humanity through education. Catholic Social Teaching calls us to prioritize the dignity of the human person and the fundamental right of every child to an education that fosters their holistic development—spiritually, intellectually, and socially. For us, empowering a girl through education is empowering the entire human race. It is an act of justice and a powerful expression of solidarity. We invite you, our valued donors who share our commitment to faith-based action and human empowerment, to partner with us in this crucial work. Your contribution doesn’t merely fund a school; it upholds the God-given dignity of a girl, secures her liberation, and ensures that the ripple effect of her education will transform generations to come. You may pay a visit to our Drop-in Centre, Day Care Centre or our Vocational Training Centre to collaborate with us in this powerful mission.
